Marbling is the art of floating paints on a base to create both intricate and freeform designs. The designs are then “printed” (transferred) onto fabric or paper. Unlike many Artforms which take years to master, Marbling on Fibers and Paper will thrill and inspire you with immediate gratification and success! Peggy teaches all the techniques for you to create a myriad of designs using carrageenen size (powdered seaweed) and acrylic paints. Designs you will learn include Swirl, Feather, Thistle, French Curl, Bird Wing, Frog’s Feet, Chevron, Peacock, Spanish Wave & Stone Marble. The first day begins with familiarizing yourself with the tools and steps of the marbling process. You will use these to create your designs on 9×12” fabrics and papers. As the day progresses, you will find that the details and uniqueness of your designs will be defined by your paint application technique, your choice of tools (thin/wide/doubles combs, rakes, dispersant, etc.) and your individual creativity. The second day continues with refining and interpreting your designs on larger surfaces of large papers and Fat quarter size cottons (18×23”) and silk scarves. In addition, on the afternoon of the second day, you will develop your own individual designs using all the new “tricks and tips” you’ve learned. By the end of the workshop, you will have created lots of marbled papers/fabrics which can be incorporated into collages, framed art, quilts, journal covers, scrapbooking, greeting cards and so much more. The materials fee is part of the total workshop fee includes all materials PLUS an extensive Handout Packet! I bring everything that you will use during the workshop days. That way all you have to bring is your enthusiasm & curiosity.

Peggy J. Wertheim, M.A.T. Surface Design Artist and Master Teaching Artist in marbling, silk painting, batik, shibori, and complex dyeing. Her 40+ year career began with textile color exploration and completion of a Master of Arts in Teaching from Miami University. Ms. Wertheim has exhibited at hundreds of juried and invitational shows and galleries simultaneously while offering workshops. This allows her to share her expertise and creativity with her love of teaching. In 2013, she was the only Teaching Artist in the USA selected to attend the prestigious Rauschenberg Foundation Power of Art Conference. She currently devotes herself to teaching workshops, private classes, and creating her Art to Wear and framed artworks.

Discover the intricate art of quilling, where you’ll learn to coil, shape, and design paper into beautiful art pieces. This hands-on class is suitable for all skill levels. Our focus will be on a specific quilling project (see photo), guiding you step-by-step through the techniques needed to complete your own unique artwork..

Students who would like to arrive early for lunch can add that option during registration.

I grew up in the Wyoming Valley near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. After graduating from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, I was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Clark Summit, Pa from 1973-1978.
I married my husband, Jack Ryan, in 1973. We had two sons and now have four grandsons who live near us now in the Charlottesville/ Waynesboro area.
In 1978, I moved to Richmond, VA to work for Dominion Energy (then VEPCO). I worked at Dominion until 2009 in the IT department, working initially as an application developer and retiring from a management position after 32 years of service. After retiring, my husband and I wanted to move closer to family in Charlottesville. We moved to Ruckersville in 2015.
Art was always a hobby and my therapy from the stressful IT job. I started with folk art painting and beaded jewelry making. After retiring, I taught myself Quilling, the art of paper coiling.
I also learned to make baskets from long leaf pine needles from my friend’s mother. She learned from her mother. The art is very old. Back in the day, raffia was used to wrap the pine needle coils but it didn’t hold up so today we used waxed thread or sinew.
Currently I am 73 years old and enjoy making art just about every day to display and sell at a local craft shop, Qute Scraps, in Ruckersville. I am an active member of the Art Guild of Greene (www.artguildofgreene.org).
I am on the board of directors and currently ending my 4th year as the president.
I also teach a variety of classes, ranging from Mandala Dot Art, Quilling, painting a gourd bowl, and pine needle basketry. These classes are held for the Art Guild of Greene, Albemarle county’s adult learning program, The Center and at Qute Scraps Handmade Boutique.

Learn the art of quilling which is the art of coiling paper and shaping the pieces into shapes that are used for your art piece. Each student will make a least one note card and have enough supplies to make many more at home.

Students who would like to stay after class for lunch can add that option during registration.

Students will design and paint a canvas table runner or 6 placemats. Designs will the students’ choice, but ideas will be available. Size of the runner will be students’ choice, but must be given to the instructor at least one week before the class. Table runner can have pointed, squared or rounded ends. Placemats will be standard size.

Vyvyan Rundgren
Vyvyan Rundgren has lived in Virginia for over thirty years. Her interest in art began as a child and stretched from watercolor to oil to painted floor cloths and then to barn quilts. For eight years she was an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in NC. Her book, Floor Cloths, Quilts & Pages was released in 2015. She is also an avid gourd artisan using only pyrography and carving to enhance each gourd. Her gourds saved her emotionally for two years while her second husband battled cancer (passing away recently). She serves as an officer on the Board of Directors for the Art Guild of Greene County and with the support of the Greene County Economic Development & Tourism she founded the Blue Ridge Barn Quilt project which has grown to be the largest barn quilt trail in Virginia, now having over 150 on display in Greene County. She not only paints many of the barn quilts, she also conducts workshops each month to teach others how to create their own.

Let the wood guide you! In this one-day course, you’ll learn basic spoon-carving techniques, including selecting the best trees for carving, breaking-down logs into usable spoon blanks, and practicing the basic axe and knife skills needed for safe and efficient carving. Using only three tools (axe, straight knife, and hook knife), you’ll begin carving your own wooden spoon. You will leave with a few blisters on your hands, an appreciation for the therapeutic nature and addictive qualities of spoon carving, and the basic technique, confidence, and reference material needed to continue carving on your own. The small group format allows for safe and individualized instruction. The Materials Fee includes greenwood spoon blanks for carving, a dedicated workstation, use of carving tools, course materials, personalized instruction, coaching, and encouragement. This workshop is open to adults and teens 14+ years old.

Ian Hart
Ian Hart operates a one-man traditional wood and metal shop near Lexington, VA. His
work lays heavily on historic tradition, both in design and manufacture,
largely involving the same tools and processes used by 17th and 18th Century
craftsmen.  Ian formally learned traditional metalwork at the American College of the Building Arts and is a self-taught woodworker.  He apprenticed with Richard
Guthrie, a Journeyman Blacksmith and 20-year veteran at Colonial Williamsburg,
who taught Ian a passion for taking the time to make things properly,
regardless of the cost.  Ian has worked in production, design and management at Cardine Studios, eventually transitioning to his own shop in Lexington, VA where he currently makes direct copies and original iron and wood works rooted in period examples, primarily using a coal forge and hand tools with a few modern pieces of equipment to speed things up. Every piece is hand finished to match historical ironwork.

This class will focus on warp weighted weaving in the Viking Age. The Warp Weighted Loom is an ancient technique of weaving dating back into the BC eras. During this class, its history and use will be presented, including differing regional techniques and examples. In addition, there will be time to provide hands on experience creating your own woven sample, which could be used as a scarf, table runner, etc.

Diana Buck
Diana has been involved in fiber arts for most of her life. She grew up in a family of knitters, crocheters, quilters, needle workers, and sewers, and learned these crafts as a child.  As an adult, she continued to expand her knowledge and experience, until she found her true calling to research and teach textile arts through history.  She has been involved in living history for over 35 years and, over those years, has focused her studies and activities on both women’s roles and historic textiles of early 18th Century through early 19th Century time periods.  Currently, as co-founder and co-leader of Njordhr’s Wanderers, her focus is on the agency of women in textile production and commerce in the North Sea region during the Early Medieval period (Viking Age).  Through partnership with her husband Krag, they have conducted experimental and reconstructive archaeological projects in textile production.  This has focused on re-creating tools and equipment based upon excavated examples, through the redevelopment of skills and techniques to create the different textile examples found in excavations.

Learn how to ecoprint on lambskin leather naturally as well as in color! In this exclusive one-day workshop, students will put ecoprinting skills to work on lambskin leather! Ecoprinting (also known as botanical printing) involves collecting leaves, plants and flowers to imprint the plant images directly upon leather. Students will learn:

• Leather-everything you need to know to understand, locate, select and work with leathers that accept ecoprinting no matter where you live!

• Equipment-what you need and how to use it (most of which you already have!

• Plants-All about plants, leaves, weeds and flowers and using them on Leather

• Mordants- descriptions and ratios

• Dyes- easy to use selections for permanent results

• Tools- cross over tools many crafters already have for leather work. • Sources for leather, dyes and mordants and tools (in US and online) At the end of class students will leave with 2 samples (approx. 8” x 18”) of ecoprinted lambskin leather- naturally ecoprinted and in color and the ability to continue the process with the knowledge learned in the workshop.

Armoire”.   She has a line of instructional PDF’s on ecoprinting techniques and is the first instructor to teach Ecoprinting on Leather in the US. She has been an instructor at many fiber art shows including Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, Southeastern Animal Fiber Fest, Carolina Fiber Fest, Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival, Michigan

Learn how to ecoprint on silk and wool naturally! Ecoprinting (also known as botanical printing) involves collecting leaves, plants and flowers to imprint their images directly upon protein fibers using a water bath process. Students will learn techniques to create beautiful, natural designs with colors drawn directly from Nature on silk and wool. At the end of the day, students will take home their silk and wool ecoprinted samples and the knowledge to continue Ecoprinting from Nature’s resources. Ecoprinting is a natural, sustainable art form. Students leave with 2 silk scarves ecoprinted naturally and in color on silk habatoi and silk noil.
