Using a Drop Spindle to Hand Spin

Date: Saturday August 1, 2020

Time:  9 AM to 5 PM

No. of Students:  Minimum: 3 students. / Maximum: 8 students

Tools: Bring a pen, a notebook, and two non-breakable cereal bowls to class.

Description: Students will learn the processes involved to spin a two color skein of wool yarn.
Instruction will start with washing raw fleece and carding dried wool using both hand carders and a drum carder. Then, students will be given a drop spindle, hand crafted by the instructor, and learn how to spin carded wool into usable wool yarn. Instruction will include a hands on exploration of natural fibers, other than wool, which can be spun into yarn. Discussion during the course of the day will also include the history of spinning fibers into yarn, the physics of why the process works, and an introduction into how the invention and use of the spinning wheel vastly increased yarn production. At the end of the class, there will be a spinning wheel demonstration and opportunity to briefly use a spinning wheel.
