Hand-Spinning Yarn From Wool Using a Drop Spindle

Saturday, April 14, 2019
6-Hour Class (Time TBA)
Old School, Waterford, Virginia

Students will be given a drop spindle (hand-crafted by the instructor, and for the student to keep) to spin a two-color skein of wool yarn from carded wool. First, students will wash raw fleece and card dried wool using both hand carders and a drum carder. Instruction will also include a hands-on exploration of natural fibers other than wool that can be spun into yarn.

Discussion during the course of the day will include the history of spinning fibers into yarn, the physics behind this process, an explanation of how the invention and use of the spinning wheel vastly increased yarn-production. At then end of class, there will be a spinning wheel demonstration, and an opportunity to briefly use a spinning wheel.
